He learned BASIC programming at age five on a family Timex Sinclair computer. He attended Stuyvesant High School, passed the AIME, and graduated in 1993. He attended SUNY Buffalo but dropped out to work for dot-com companies, including MojoNation, whose distributed file architecture inspired BitTorrent. He designed the BitTorrent protocol in April 2001 and released the first implementation on July 2, 2001.
