Released the first BitTorrent client and protocol implementation on July 2, 2001 at age 25, creating what would become one of the most widely used peer-to-peer file-sharing protocols, accounting for 43-70% of all internet traffic by 2009.

Cohen grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan as the son of a teacher and computer scientist. He learned BASIC programming at age five on a family Timex Sinclair computer. He attended Stuyvesant High School, passed the AIME, and graduated in 1993. He attended SUNY Buffalo but dropped out to work for dot-com companies, including MojoNation, whose distributed file architecture inspired BitTorrent. He designed the BitTorrent protocol in April 2001 and released the first implementation on July 2, 2001.
