I was watching a historical drama when a small scene caught my attention.
The king was watering his tulips with a beautiful, ornate jug. He could easily have asked a servant to do it, but he probably enjoyed tending to the flowers himself. It gave him a small sense of accomplishment.
But then I thought: he probably didn’t fetch the water.
Someone had filled the jug and placed it beside him. Someone had planted the flowers, maintained the garden, and cleared away every annoying step. The king was left with only the pleasant final action:
pick up the jug, pour the water, feel like you cared for the flowers.
And he did care for them. The feeling wasn’t fake.
But somebody filled the jug.
That scene felt like a useful way to think about privilege.
Privilege isn’t only having more money. It is having more of life prepared for you in advance.
A child from an ordinary family may know only one safe path: study, get a degree, find a stable job, and avoid mistakes. It may be the only path anyone around them understands.
A child from a wealthy or well-connected family often sees a much larger map. Starting a company is an option. Studying abroad is an option. Taking a year to experiment is an option. Joining a risky startup is an option.
More importantly, they have people who can guide them.
Someone can tell them which opportunities matter, which credentials are useless, whom to speak to, when to negotiate, and when a supposedly risky decision is actually safe.
And they get more attempts.
For one person, failure might mean debt, family pressure, or several lost years. For another, it is simply an experiment that didn’t work.
This changes not only their odds of success, but also their personality.
When someone repeatedly experiences:
I wanted something, I acted, and the world responded,
they develop confidence and agency.
When someone repeatedly experiences:
I wanted something, but money, bureaucracy, or lack of access stopped me,
they learn to be cautious.
The privileged person may eventually become genuinely more decisive and capable. But the environment helped produce those qualities.
In software, an abstraction hides complicated work behind a simple interface. You press “send” without thinking about networks, servers, operating systems, and decades of engineering.
Privilege can work in the same way.
“I want an internship” becomes a phone call.
“I want to start a company” becomes a meeting with lawyers, investors, and potential customers.
“I want to study abroad” becomes a prepared list of universities, tutors, consultants, and financial support.
The person still has to make decisions. They may still work hard. But they are interacting with the world through a private, high-level interface that most people do not have.
This is also where privilege connects with “standing on the shoulders of giants.”
All progress works by turning previous effort into infrastructure. Scientists build on old discoveries. Programmers build on operating systems and libraries. We perform a small final action on top of centuries of accumulated work.
The important difference is access.
When an abstraction is available to billions of people, we call it progress.
When it is available to only 0.001% of people, we call it privilege.
A smartphone camera hides enormous complexity, but millions of people can use one. A private network of capital, advisers, introductions, assistants, and family reputation also hides enormous complexity — but only for a tiny group.
The mechanism is the same:
other people’s work becomes invisible infrastructure, allowing someone else to begin near the final step.
And because we only experience the part we personally perform, we naturally overestimate how much of the whole process belonged to us.
The king really did water the tulips.
But understanding privilege means remembering to ask:
Who filled the jug?
