He formed the folk duo the Sallyangie with his sister Sally in 1967, recording an album in 1969. He joined Kevin Ayers' band the Whole World in 1970, playing on two albums at Abbey Road Studios, before demoing Tubular Bells in 1971 and recording it for Virgin Records in 1972-73 at age 19.
