Born to Raymond Henry Oldfield, a general practitioner, and Maureen, an Irish nurse who developed barbiturate addiction and mental health problems. Father gave him his first guitar. Grew up in Reading, Berkshire, with elder siblings Sally and Terence, both also musicians. Left school at 15.
