Wiles discovered Fermat's Last Theorem at age 10 in a library book and was captivated. He studied mathematics at Merton College, Oxford, graduating in 1974, then began graduate work at Clare College, Cambridge under John Coates. His early research on elliptic curves led to the Coates-Wiles result on the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture in 1977, published when he was 24, and he joined Harvard as Assistant Professor the same year.
