Co-authored with John Coates the paper 'On the Conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer' (Inventiones Mathematicae, 1977) at age 24, making the first progress on one of mathematics' fundamental conjectures, and became Assistant Professor at Harvard University the same year.
