Amano was born in Shizuoka, Japan, the youngest of four children. His father was a traditional Suruga lacquerware artist. He went on to design characters for Gatchaman, Tekkaman, Honeybee Hutch, and Casshern, remaining at Tatsunoko until going freelance in 1982.
