Born in Montreal to two university educators, Nézet-Séguin began piano at age five and decided to become a conductor at age ten after seeing Charles Dutoit lead the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. At 13, he became the youngest student to enter the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal, where he earned premier prix diplomas in multiple disciplines. At 19, he became music director of the Choeur polyphonique de Montréal and spent over a year studying with conductor Carlo Maria Giulini. He became assistant conductor at the Opéra de Montréal in 1998 and was appointed music director of the Orchestre Métropolitain in 2000.
