Drinfeld was a child prodigy who could do impressive mathematics by age six. He attended a specialized physics and mathematics school in Kharkov, published his first paper at 15, won IMO gold with full marks in 1969, and entered Moscow State University at 15. Under Yuri Manin's supervision, he solved a substantial part of the Langlands program by age 20 and completed the GL(2) case by age 24, defending his PhD thesis in 1978.
