Fetisov debuted for CSKA Moscow's junior team at age 16 and joined the senior team in the Soviet Championship League in 1978–79. He was named top defenceman at the 1976 European Junior Hockey Championships at age 18 and achieved the same honour at the 1978 World Junior Championships. He quickly became a cornerstone of the Soviet national team's 'Big Five' defensive pairing with Alexei Kasatonov, winning World Championship gold in 1978, 1981, 1982, and 1983. By 1982, at age 24, he was named USSR Player of the Year. Wayne Gretzky called him 'the best I've ever played against.'
