Born in London to computer pioneers who worked on the Ferranti Mark 1, Berners-Lee attended Emanuel School and earned a first-class physics degree from Queen's College, Oxford in 1976. After engineering roles at Plessey and D.G. Nash, he spent June–December 1980 at CERN building ENQUIRE before later returning to invent the Web.
