Mark Calaway began training under Buzz Sawyer in late 1986 and made his wrestling debut on June 26, 1987 for World Class Championship Wrestling. He worked various gimmicks across regional promotions, winning the USWA Unified World Heavyweight Championship in April 1989 at age 24.
