Goldwasser grew up in Tel Aviv after being born in New York to Israeli parents, then returned to the US for undergraduate studies at Carnegie Mellon (BS 1979). She moved to UC Berkeley for graduate school under Manuel Blum, where she co-developed probabilistic encryption with Silvio Micali while a grad student.
