Won the 1999 Esat Young Scientist Exhibition and EU Young Scientist of the Year at age 16 for developing the Cayley-Purser public-key cryptography algorithm.
Flannery grew up in County Cork, Ireland, and was encouraged in mathematics by her father David Flannery, a mathematics lecturer. She attended an evening math enrichment class taught by her father, which led to a work-experience placement at Baltimore Technologies where she was shown an unpublished cryptographic scheme by Michael Purser.
