Pike grew up in Toronto, Canada, and studied physics at the University of Toronto where he worked in the Dynamic Graphics Project. He pursued graduate work at Caltech, earning an MS in electrical engineering. He joined Bell Labs in 1980 as a Member of Technical Staff in the Computing Sciences Research Center, the lab that created Unix, and immediately began work on graphics and windowing systems.
