Stallman was programming from high school, hired at the IBM New York Scientific Center in summer 1970, and became a programmer at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in 1971 during his first year at Harvard. He quickly became a central figure in the MIT hacker community, developing system software including Emacs (1976) and the AI technique of dependency-directed backtracking (1975), all before age 26.
