Peter Blangé debuted for the Dutch national volleyball team at age 19 in 1984, benefiting from his exceptional 205 cm height and natural setting ability. He was part of the Dutch 'Bankras' system in 1987 that concentrated top volleyball players outside the regular league. At age 24, he won a bronze medal at the 1989 European Volleyball Championship. His family background is not well documented in reviewed sources, but his physical attributes and the Dutch volleyball system were key factors in his early development.
