Won the 1973 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography at age 22 for 'The Terror of War' (Napalm Girl), one of the most iconic photographs of the 20th century, taken on June 8, 1972 when he was 21.

Ut was hired by the Associated Press Saigon bureau in 1966 at age 15, replacing his older brother Huynh Thanh My who was killed covering the Vietnam War. He started in the darkroom and began shooting in the field by 1968 at age 17. On June 8, 1972, at 21, he took the Napalm Girl photograph and won the Pulitzer Prize the following year at 22.
