T1 Global iconMilestone (age 17)
Won two gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (1988 at 16, 1989 at 17), including a perfect score in 1988, becoming the first Vietnamese student to win two IMO golds.
Born in Hanoi, Vietnam in 1972, Ngô Bảo Châu was the son of a physics professor and a physician. He won two consecutive IMO gold medals (1988, 1989), becoming the first Vietnamese student to achieve this feat. After high school, a scholarship fell through due to geopolitical changes, but Paul Germain of the French Academy of Sciences arranged for him to study in France. He entered the Ecole Normale Supérieure in 1992 and earned his PhD in 1997 from Université Paris-Sud under Gérard Laumon.

Ngo Bao Chau's leverage provenance
Each non-zero lever gets a best-supported origin, evidence signals, and confidence. Unresolved is the honest default when the biography cannot distinguish self-built, advantage-enabled, earned, external, or mixed.

A structural wave is external to the person, even when their position improved access to it.
Frontier geography (1/2)
This is a bounded inference from the current annotations—not a claim about private effort, merit, or the percentage of Ngo Bao Chau's outcome attributable to any origin.
Luck is not a leftover score.Structural luck, Encounter luck, Event luck, Outcome variance can change every arrow in the path. This successful-only dataset cannot observe the near-identical paths that did not break through, so luck stays visible and unscored.
Within Researchers / independent engineers, Ngo Bao Chau's starting-advantage total is at the 86th percentile. Separately, their built or converted leverage total is at the 55th percentile. Other T1 profiles average 8.9 / 24 starting advantage and 13.6 / 25 leverage. Similar scores appear in other tiers, so these figures describe positioning—not a cause.

Evidence summary
Ngô Bảo Châu grew up in an intellectual household in Hanoi — his father was a physics professor and mother a physician. He won two consecutive IMO gold medals (1988-89), including a perfect score in 1988, becoming the first Vietnamese student to achieve two golds. After geopolitical changes disrupted his planned scholarship to Hungary, Paul Germain of the French Academy of Sciences arranged for him to study in France. He entered ENS Paris in 1992 and completed his PhD in 1997, later proving the Fundamental Lemma and winning the Fields Medal in 2010.
