Co-discovered the AKS primality test in 2002 as an undergraduate at IIT Kanpur, the first deterministic polynomial-time algorithm for primality testing, published in Annals of Mathematics in 2004.
Kayal was born and raised in Guwahati, India, and was an undergraduate at IIT Kanpur studying computer science. Along with batchmate Nitin Saxena and professor Manindra Agrawal, he developed the AKS primality test as part of their joint B.Tech. thesis. Both Kayal and Saxena had been members of the Indian team for the 1997 International Mathematical Olympiad. The breakthrough attracted worldwide attention, including coverage in the New York Times.
