Near (programmer)

Researchers / independent engineers · Software/Tech · milestone at age 21 ·T3 Domain-recognized
Milestone (age 21)
Launched the bsnes project on October 14, 2004 (age 21), building the first Super Nintendo emulator to pursue and later achieve 100% library compatibility through cycle-accurate hardware emulation; earlier completed Dragon Quest V fan translation in November 2001 (age 18).
David Kirk Ginder (pseudonyms Near / byuu), born February 22, 1983, entered fan translation as a teenager, self-taught assembly and tooling from age ~14–16, completed Dragon Quest V localization in 2001, and started bsnes in 2004 after hardware-accuracy failures on Der Langrisser. Later created higan, invented the MSU-1 mapper, and led major SNES preservation work before dying by suicide in Tokyo in 2021 after sustained online harassment.

Near (programmer)'s leverage provenance

Each non-zero lever gets a best-supported origin, evidence signals, and confidence. Unresolved is the honest default when the biography cannot distinguish self-built, advantage-enabled, earned, external, or mixed.

This is a bounded inference from the current annotations—not a claim about private effort, merit, or the percentage of Near (programmer)'s outcome attributable to any origin.

Luck is not a leftover score.

Structural luck, Encounter luck, Event luck, Outcome variance can change every arrow in the path. This successful-only dataset cannot observe the near-identical paths that did not break through, so luck stays visible and unscored.

Within Researchers / independent engineers, Near (programmer)'s starting-advantage total is at the 74th percentile. Separately, their built or converted leverage total is at the 55th percentile. Other T3 profiles average 7.0 / 24 starting advantage and 11.7 / 25 leverage. Similar scores appear in other tiers, so these figures describe positioning—not a cause.

Evidence summary

Near accumulated exceptional SNES assembly and emulation practice from the mid-teens through completed fan translations by age 18 and the 2004 launch of bsnes at 21. Edge came from self-directed online community immersion and extreme concentration rather than elite institutions or family capital. bsnes/higan set the accuracy standard for SNES emulation and enabled preservation and even Stephen Hawking speech-synthesizer work derived from related cores.
