Toro grew up in Boulder, Colorado, the daughter of Colombian immigrants. She took college-level mathematics in sixth grade and skipped fifth, seventh, and eighth grades. At 14, she performed research on neutrino oscillations at MIT's Research Science Institute under Edmund Bertschinger, which won her the Intel STS. She attended MIT for her undergraduate degree and completed her PhD at Harvard under Nima Arkani-Hamed in 2007.
