Süleymanoğlu was born in a small village in Bulgaria to a Turkish minority family; his father was a miner. He began lifting weights at age 10 and by 14 came within 2.5 kg of a world record. At 15 he set his first world record and won the World Junior championship. He became European Champion at 17 and World Champion at 18, then defected to Turkey in 1986.
