In October 2023, at age ~21, won the Vesuvius Challenge First Letters Prize ($40,000) as the first person to recover a complete word (ΠΟΡΦΥΡΑϹ, 'purple') from an unopened Herculaneum scroll using machine learning on CT scans.
Lincoln, Nebraska native and son of UNL robotics professor Shane Farritor; studied computer science at the Raikes School at University of Nebraska–Lincoln and interned at SpaceX. While still an undergrad, he trained ML models on flattened Herculaneum papyrus volumes, first finding letters and then the full word that won the First Letters Prize, then co-won the $700,000 Grand Prize in February 2024.
