Gustav Åhr was born in Allentown, PA to a first-grade teacher mother and Swedish father, both Harvard graduates; his maternal grandfather was a Harvard professor. He was placed in gifted programs in elementary school and played trombone and tuba. After his parents separated when he was 15, he began making music on SoundCloud in 2013 under the name Trap Goose, drawing from underground acts and emo influences. He moved to Los Angeles in 2016 and rapidly built a cult following through his distinctive emo-rap sound.
