Winstein attended the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and developed the Tyrannosaurus Lex system for lexical steganography after reading about steganography in Tom Clancy's Patriot Games. He published the work and submitted it to the Intel STS, winning third place. He attended MIT for his undergraduate and graduate work, later creating Mosh (mobile shell), a UDP-based SSH replacement. He also worked as a staff reporter at the Wall Street Journal before returning to MIT for his PhD.
