Keith Winstein
Milestone (age 17)
Won third place in the 1999 Intel Science Talent Search at age 17 for inventing lexical steganography, a method of hiding secret messages in text by substituting synonyms, creating the first automated linguistic steganography system.
Winstein attended the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and developed the Tyrannosaurus Lex system for lexical steganography after reading about steganography in Tom Clancy's Patriot Games. He published the work and submitted it to the Intel STS, winning third place. He attended MIT for his undergraduate and graduate work, later creating Mosh (mobile shell), a UDP-based SSH replacement. He also worked as a staff reporter at the Wall Street Journal before returning to MIT for his PhD.
