Attained the Grandmaster title in 1974 at age 22, becoming the Netherlands' third Grandmaster after Max Euwe and Jan Hein Donner, and won the Dutch Chess Championship for the first time in the same year. By age 26 he had also won international tournaments at Hastings 1973-74, Sombor 1974, Netanya 1975, and Reykjavik 1976.

Timman was born in Amsterdam, the son of mathematics professor Reinier Timman and his wife Anneke, who as a schoolgirl was a mathematics student of former world champion Max Euwe. He learned chess at 8, came fourth in the Dutch Junior (under-20) Championship at 12, became junior champion at 14, and finished third at the World Junior Championship in Jerusalem at 15. He received the International Master title in 1971 at 19 and the Grandmaster title in 1974 at 22.
