In 1976 at age 23–24 he co-authored with Douglas McIlroy the Bell Labs technical report 'An Algorithm for Differential File Comparison' (Hunt–McIlroy algorithm), foundational to Unix diff; in 1977 (age 24–25) he published the Hunt–Szymanski LCS algorithm in Communications of the ACM.
Born Trenton, NJ, to Augustus and Bernyce Hunt; first of two children. B.S. electrical engineering cum laude from Princeton; M.S. and Ph.D. electrical engineering from Stanford; early NSBE chapter member. Work on diff prototypes and LCS algorithms while young produced algorithms still used in version control, wikis, and phylogenetics software.
