Wrote Gosling Emacs in 1981 at age 25, the first Emacs implementation for Unix, written in C and commercially distributed by UniPress Software.
Gosling taught himself programming as a teenager in Calgary by sneaking into the University of Calgary computer lab, and wrote software for the ISIS 2 satellite while in high school. He earned a BSc from the University of Calgary in 1977 and pursued a PhD at Carnegie Mellon University, where he wrote Gosling Emacs, a multiprocessor Unix, and a PERQ emulator that later inspired the Java VM concept.
