Educated at Charterhouse School and Merton College, Oxford (Mathematics and Philosophy, Class I Honours), Clark began writing open source software around 1987. He started work on groff in early 1989 as a contribution to the GNU Project, motivated by an interest in typography from reading the TeXBook and the lack of a free troff implementation.
