Ferreira grew up in Ballydehob, County Cork, Ireland, the son of boatbuilder parents — mother Anne Eckardt from Germany and father Rui Ferreira from Portugal. He spent his childhood kayaking around remote coastal areas, noticing increasing plastic pollution. He entered the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition three times, won 1st place in Chemistry at the 2018 Intel ISEF, and worked as a curator at Schull Planetarium. He developed the ferrofluid microplastic extraction method over 1,000 tests, achieving 87% removal efficiency. A minor planet was named after him by the MIT Lincoln Laboratory.
