Evidence summary

Kusturica's path to his Silver Lion win at 26 was built on formal training at FAMU Prague (1978), one of Europe's most prestigious film schools, and early exposure to filmmaking through his father's friendship with a Yugoslav director. After FAMU, he directed TV shorts in Yugoslavia before his feature debut won at Venice. The Yugoslav state film system provided production infrastructure, and the Prague film school network gave him both technical depth and artistic community.
