Kićanović began playing basketball at age 13 in his hometown of Čačak, joining KK Železničar in 1966. He moved to Borac Čačak and then Partizan Belgrade in 1972, quickly becoming a key player for the dominant Yugoslav national team that won multiple European and World Championship medals throughout the 1970s.
