Co-discovered with Frank Wilczek in 1996 at age 25 the type of non-Abelian statistics in paired quantum Hall states associated with Majorana zero modes, a theoretical result that became the cornerstone of Microsoft's quantum computing program.
Nayak was born in New York City and graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1988, winning the top prize at the Science Talent Search that year. He earned his BA from Harvard in 1992 and his PhD from Princeton in 1996 under Frank Wilczek. His dissertation on theories of the half-filled Landau level led to the discovery of non-Abelian statistics associated with Majorana zero modes. He became a professor at UCLA in 1997 and joined Microsoft in 2005.
