Pigem grew up in Olot, Catalonia, Spain, and studied architecture at the Vallès School of Architecture (ETSAV) near Barcelona, graduating in November 1987 at age 25. In March 1988, she co-founded RCR Arquitectes with classmates Rafael Aranda and Ramon Vilalta in Olot. Their first major recognition came from winning a 1988 national competition for a lighthouse design, which established their collaborative approach to architecture. They went on to win the Pritzker Prize in 2017.
