Won back-to-back Copa Libertadores (1992, 1993) and Intercontinental Cup (1992, 1993) with São Paulo FC, and was named South American Footballer of the Year in 1994, all by age 24.
Raised in the Jardim Irene favela of São Paulo, Cafu was rejected from nine youth squad trials before finally passing at São Paulo FC in 1988 at age 18. He won the Copa São Paulo youth tournament that year, made his professional debut in 1989, and was mentored by coach Telê Santana who converted him from right midfield to wingback.
