Artwick grew up in Norridge, Illinois, attended Triton Junior College, then studied electrical engineering at the University of Illinois (BS 1975, MS 1976), working in the Digital Computer Lab and Aviation Research Lab and becoming a pilot. His May 1976 thesis showed real-time flight display on microprocessors; he founded Sublogic in 1977 and shipped A2-FS1 Flight Simulator for Apple II, later licensed to Microsoft as Microsoft Flight Simulator (1982).
