Brett Hull grew up immersed in hockey as the son of NHL legend Bobby Hull and professional figure skater Joanne McKay. He started organized hockey at age 4 in Chicago and played in the 1977 Quebec Pee-Wee tournament. Despite being overlooked as a 'pudgy' youth, he scored 105 goals in 56 games for the Penticton Knights (BCJHL) and earned a scholarship to University of Minnesota-Duluth. Drafted 117th overall by Calgary in 1984, he split time between Calgary and the minors before being traded to St. Louis in 1988, where he broke out with 41 goals his first season and 72 the next.
