In 1990–1991, at age 22–23 while a Unix systems programmer at the University of Wales Aberystwyth, created and publicly released Crack (first public Usenet release v2.7a on 15 July 1991)—the first widely used standalone Unix password cracker, later foundational for admin security tooling and CrackLib.

Born 22 April 1968, Muffett graduated in astronomy from UCL (1988) then worked as a systems programmer at UCW Aberystwyth (1988–1991). There he rewrote Dan Farmer’s pwc into Crack, releasing it publicly in 1991 before joining Sun Microsystems in 1992 and rising to principal security engineer.
