Shamir was born in Tel Aviv and showed early interest in science, participating in youth academic programs and science summer camps at the Weizmann Institute. He earned his BSc in mathematics from Tel Aviv University in 1973, then an MSc (1975) and PhD (1977) in computer science from the Weizmann Institute under Zohar Manna.
