Born in London in July 1970, Back taught himself BASIC on a Sinclair ZX81 and spent his time reverse engineering video games and finding decryption keys. He completed A levels in advanced mathematics, physics, and economics, then earned a PhD in distributed systems from the University of Exeter in 1996. During his PhD, he became interested in PGP encryption and electronic cash, spending two-thirds of his time on cryptography.
