The Look Sideways public research exhibit examines 3,578 early-breakthrough paths across founders, operators, athletes, creators, and researchers. The evidence drawn from these detailed records demonstrates that direct comparison structurally fails because it deletes a crucial underlying variable: sequence. Sequence is the specific chronological order in which resources, opportunities, headwinds, and macro conditions emerge in a person’s life. When a person encounters a particular advantage matters just as much as what that advantage actually is. Comparing outcomes without measuring sequence is effectively like trying to solve an equation while ignoring half of the variables involved.
The paths documented in our archive show that early sequence heavily dictates later trajectory. Missing a narrow opportunity window by just six months, or encountering a structural barrier before accumulating enough leverage to overcome it, alters the course of a career permanently. We cannot borrow another person’s outcome without also borrowing their exact sequence of events. To look at an end state without looking at the sequence that built it is to read the final page of a novel and assume you understand the plot.

Conversely, an upward market trend happening right as a founder graduates can multiply the impact of their initial effort.
Because we only ever see the final outcome in public spaces, we mistakenly attribute the entire result to sheer, isolated effort. This is not to dismiss perseverance. Perseverance is explicitly documented across our archive. However, perseverance is applied directly to the conditions and the sequence, not independently of them. Effort intensity does not linearly equal distance traveled when the starting position and the timing of structural opportunities differ.
By observing the chronology of events in these paths, we find that the timing of a single forced door permanently shifts every subsequent probability. A direct comparison between your current path and someone else’s publicly visible path ignores the reality that your unique sequences will never align.
What you brought, what you were handed, and what surrounded you

First, what you brought includes your intrinsic capabilities, your early deliberate investments in specific skills, and your personal baseline. Second, what you were handed covers the resources, access, financial stability, and direct advantages actively provided to you without requiring a transaction. Third, what surrounded you represents the macro conditions, the geographic reality, and the specific cultural or economic landscape heavily present at the time of your pivotal actions.
Crucially, these three factors are never summed into a single score. A total score would simply offer one more number to rank people by, and ranking human paths is exactly the reading this project refuses to support. Instead, we maintain them as independent vectors evaluated on a scale of −1 to 3. Across our dataset, we have recorded 458 documented headwind readings—instances where the initial conditions posed explicit structural resistance, pulling the factor score into the negative.
Sequence interacts with these three factors constantly. What surrounded you at age 18 dictates the immediate utility of what you were handed at age 16. A financial gift (what you were handed) has a profoundly different structural impact during an era of expanding industries (what surrounded you) than it does during a geographic contraction. When you compare your progress against one of the 1,670 professionally distinctive paths identified in the archive, you are often looking at a sequence where these three factors aligned. You cannot judge your own pace without auditing your own three factors and acknowledging any of the 458 headwinds you faced that the other person bypassed.
The four forms of luck that shape sequences
Luck is frequently treated as a generic force, but it operates through highly specific mechanisms. Our project published a luck directory featuring nine sourced ordinary-person cases designed strictly to isolate these mechanisms. Through this lens, we group luck into four forms: structural, encounter, event, and variance.
Structural luck is deeply embedded in your geography, era, or systemic global policies—for instance, winning a highly contested visa draw. Encounter luck involves the unpredictable collision with individuals who open doors that would otherwise remain bolted shut. Event luck is a discrete external shock, such as a sudden policy shift that instantaneously creates demand for a skill you have been building. Variance luck is the favorable outcome of repeated probabilistic events, where successfully surviving a high-risk scenario allows you to continue playing the game.
When comparing paths, we often consciously ignore luck because it cannot be readily replicated by effort. Yet, the sequence of a career is largely steered by when and how these four forms of luck materialize. If a person experiences positive encounter luck early in their journey, they gain access to networks that subsequently increase their variance luck. Identical choices made by two different people will yield entirely different outcomes based on the luck that intercedes directly between the choice and the final result. Therefore, comparing your current state to another’s without accounting for their unscored luck creates a false equivalence.
Survivorship bias and the bounded 64-to-1 thought experiment
The single most dangerous aspect of personal comparison is survivorship bias. Their visible surviving streak is heavily documented, and they may genuinely attribute their elevated position entirely to their unique strategy or exceptional grit.
However, this narrative ignores the unobserved paths—the other 63 equally capable individuals who made the exact same choices, exerted the exact same effort, but simply did not survive the repeated consequential uncertainty of the probability gates. When you evaluate your own life against an established survivor, you are unfairly measuring your highly uncertain reality against someone who has already cleared the peak selection process. It is an asymmetrical comparison that systematically undervalues your own perseverance while overvaluing the survivor’s deterministic agency.
Breaking the resemblance trap: Why similar starts diverge
People often fall into the resemblance trap: assuming that if they share a specific starting point, demographic marker, or educational background with a successful figure, they should achieve the same outcome on the exact same timeline. Resemblance is not destiny. Because sequence, specific headwinds, and the four distinct forms of luck are intensely personal and unrepeatable, similar starts routinely diverge.
This is exactly why we replaced gamified resemblance questionnaires with static, person-specific comparison breakers.
