Keep the mechanisms. Drop the identity. Zhao Hongbo was born on September 22, 1973, in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China. He began learning to skate in 1980 at age seven. In 1991, he won the pairs skating championship at the National Games with partner Xie Maomao. In 1992, he was paired with Shen Xue, and within four months they won the national championships. They made their World Championships debut in 1994, finishing 21st, but steadily climbed the ranks. By 1998, they finished fourth at the Nagano Olympics and fifth at Worlds. In 1999, they won their first World Championship silver medal, establishing themselves as a top pairs team.
