Born in Shanghai to two former professional basketball players (father 2.08m, mother 1.88m), Yao began basketball at age 9 and entered a junior sports school. He tried out for the Shanghai Sharks junior team at 13, practicing ten hours a day, and joined the senior team by 17. He represented China at the 1997 FIBA U22 World Championship and helped China win the FIBA Asia Championship in 1999 at age 19. He was drafted #1 overall in 2002 at age 22, becoming the first international player selected first overall without US college experience.
