Wang Hao was born in Changchun, Jilin Province, China and began table tennis training at age 7 after his father saw a TV advertisement for a children's program. He trained under coach Liu Hongqi and was exceptionally admitted to the Changchun City Sports School at age 10. He joined the Bayi (military) team at 13, was selected for the national second team in 1998, and promoted to the first team in 2000. By 2003, he was winning major international titles, and in 2004 he won Olympic silver in singles at Athens.
