He won almost every race he entered as a teenager, reportedly winning 100 consecutive junior races on a $20 second-hand bike. He won 16 Norwegian junior champion titles between ages 10 and 16. His international breakthrough came in 1998 when he won the U23 World Time Trial Championship at age 20. He also won the U23 versions of Paris–Roubaix and Paris–Tours. He turned professional with Crédit Agricole in 2000 and quickly established himself as a top sprinter, winning Tour de France stages and the green jersey.
