He studied computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, founding several small startups including SponsorNet New Media while still a student. In 1998, he co-founded Fieldlink (later Confinity, then PayPal) with Peter Thiel, serving as CTO. He co-created the Gausebeck-Levchin test, one of the first commercial CAPTCHAs. PayPal went public in February 2002 and was acquired by eBay in July 2002.
