Keep the mechanisms. Drop the identity. Tan Dun was born in a village in Changsha, Hunan, China. During the Cultural Revolution he was sent to work as a rice planter and learned traditional Chinese string instruments. After a ferry accident killed members of a Peking opera troupe, he was recruited as their arranger and violist. In 1977, after passing a highly competitive entrance exam, he entered the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where he studied with Zhao Xindao and Li Yinghai and was exposed to Western classical music for the first time.
