Born in Budapest in 1969, Susan Polgár was the eldest of three daughters in an educational experiment by her father László Polgár, who believed 'geniuses are made, not born.' She and her sisters were homeschooled with chess as the principal subject. She won her first tournament at age 4 (the Budapest Girls' Under-11 Championship with a 10-0 score), won the World Under-16 Girls Championship at 12, and became the world's top-rated female player at 15 in 1984. Despite FIDE restrictions on her participation, she earned the Grandmaster title in 1991.
